Masada
32" x 32" x 2"

All wood and paints of this piece are original. Two huge antique ink-stained type blocks are deconstructed to represent a vista of Fortress Masada, with tan desert and stone under gray horizon. Extremely rare antique Hebrew wood type letters symbolically stand atop the fortress representing the Jewish resistance to the Roman siege.

I have a small but very rare and beautiful collection of Hebrew wood type, mostly from the Jewish Daily Forward of New York. I use it sparingly and treat it with great respect, attempting to create Judaic works that rise far above the ordinary in materials and concept. I mix sacred and profane elements while suggesting the distress of history with worn historic items.
